CIAPP Application Fees

The CIAPP secretariat will be closed from noon on September 20th through Sunday, October 9th.

Effective March 1, 2016

For the first two years, the cost of a certification, upgrade of certification or renewal of certification application was zero dollars to the applicant, the cost being subsidized 100% by CAPA. Since February, 2014, the Canadian Access and Privacy Association (CAPA) has subsidized the cost of a certification, an upgrade of certification or a renewal of certification application by 50% of the actual cost, so the cost to the applicant was $25 for an initial application for certification or an upgrade of certification and $10 for a renewal of a certification. It is now time for the Canadian Institute of Access and Privacy Professionals (CIAPP) to be able to carry the full costs of the certification and renewal process. Therefore, from March 1, 2016, the cost to file an application for certification, or for an upgrade of certification, will be $45.00 and to renew a certification, $20.00. Don’t forget that an initial or upgraded certification is valid for two years, as is a renewal of a certification. Thus the cost per year is $22.50 and $10.00 respectively.

To apply for certification, you must fill out the part of the application form appropriate to the level of certification for which you wish to be considered.  The forms can be found on the CIAPP website  (http://www.ciapp.ca).  Be sure to date and sign the application form and send it to the address on the form or by fax to (613) 833-0905.  The fee for initial applications and upgrades of applications is $45.00.You may pay by cheque or credit card. If you are paying by cheque, make the cheque payable to the "Canadian Access and Privacy Association" or CAPA. If you wish to pay by credit card, please include the full name as shown on the credit card and the expiration date. The charge will appear on your statement as being made to CAPA, as CAPA is allowing CIAPP to use its banking and credit card facilities in order to save the huge costs of setting up and using credit card services and the inordinate cost of setting up, maintaining and using a business chequing account for such small amounts of money. If you prefer to give your credit card number by telephone, please indicate this on your renewal application and call CIAPP at (613) 833-0585. Applications being paid by credit card may be faxed to (613) 833-0905 or sent by email to info@ciapp.ca.

CIAPP Application Fee
Effective February 14, 1014

The Canadian Access and Privacy Association (CAPA) has subsidized CIAPP certification for the first two years. That period has now come to an end. There is now a modest fee for processing the applications, producing the certification credentials, and mailing the credentials. CIAPP does not make a profit from this service. The fee for initial applications and upgrades of applications is $25.00.You may pay by cheque or credit card. If you are paying by cheque, make the cheque payable to the "Canadian Access and Privacy Association". Applications being paid by credit card may be faxed to (613) 833-0905 or sent by email to info@ciapp.ca.

All certifications are for two years and then must be renewed. If you are certified at the CIAPP-Certified (CIAPP-C) level AND you have received the University of Alberta IAPP certificate, your certification has no expiry date. This does not apply to any other level, even if there is an IAPP certificate.

CIAPP Renewal of Certification Procedure
Effective February 14, 2014

The following is the procedure to renew any level of certification from February 14, 2014 onward:

If your certification is at the CIAPP-C (or Certified) level and it is based on completion of the University of Alberta IAPP Certificate program, or equivalent certificate from another institution, there is no need to renew your certification as it has no expiry date. If your wallet card does have an expiry date and your certification was based on having a U of A IAPP certificate, it is in error and if you wish to have a wallet card with no expiry date, please let us know. All other certifications expire on the date imprinted on your wallet card.

While the initial certification during the launch period was free of charge, due to the financial support of the Canadian Access and Privacy Association (CAPA), this period has ended and both initial certification and renewals of certification now carry a modest fee. The fee is $10.00 to renew an existing certification. This fee is designed to defray most of the cost of reviewing the applications, the cost of the wallet cards and the postage involved. CIAPP does not make a profit from the certification renewal process.

In order to renew your existing certification, you must complete the part of the form appropriate for your level of certification. Be sure to date and sign the form. These forms can be found on our website (http://www.ciapp.ca). Complete the renewal application and send it along with the fee to the address indicated on the renewal form. If you are paying by cheque, make the cheque payable to the “Canadian Access and Privacy Association.” If you wish to pay by credit card, please include the full name as shown on the credit card and the expiration date. The charge will appear on your statement as being made to CAPA, as CAPA is allowing CIAPP to use its banking and credit card facilities in order to save the huge costs of setting up and using credit card services and the inordinate cost of setting up, maintaining and using a business chequing account for such small amounts of money. If you wish to pay by credit card, please include the full name as shown on the credit card and the expiration date. The charge will appear on your statement as being made to CAPA, as CAPA is allowing CIAPP to use its credit card facilities in order to save the huge costs of setting up credit card services for such small amounts of money. If you prefer to give your credit card number by telephone, please indicate this on your renewal application and call CIAPP at (613) 833-0585. Applications being paid by credit card may be faxed to (613) 833-0905 or sent by email to info@ciapp.ca.

Once your certification is renewed, you will receive a new wallet card with the new expiration date.

The renewal form cannot be used to upgrade your certification level. To upgrade, you must fill out a new application at the desired level AND provided full documentation for that level.

If you have any questions, please call CIAPP at (613) 833-0585.
